The book presents information on morphemes in ASL. Two examples are provided, including numeral incorporation in nouns and noun-verb pairs. Examples of numeral incorporation in nouns include number of weeks, number of persons, and age. A specific number can be included in the sign being presented, e.g., 2-WEEK, 3-WEEK, 5-WEEK, 2-INDIVIDUAL-WALKING, 5-INDIVIDUAL-WALKING, 1-YEAR-OLD, 2-YEAR-OLD, 5-YEAR OLD. Another category of morphemes in ASL is noun-verb pairs. In these pairs, the handshape remains the same but the movement varies . Typically, verb signs employ of one long movement. By contrast, noun signs are made with short, repeated movements. Examples include: SIT/CHAIR; FLY/AIRPLANE; PRINT/NEWSPAPER; OPEN-BOOK/BOOK; and PULL-THE-CAR-INTO-THE-GARAGE/GARAGE. Those are just a few examples of morpheme categories in ASL. |
